Have you ever wondered whether you’re singing with a real or fake voice? Many people think that they have a speaking voice and then entirely separate to that is their singing voice.
I think a lot of people arrive at that conclusion because, for the untrained voice at least, the sounds of speaking when compared to the sounds of their singing are radically different. So, what’s going on here?
Well, the difference we hear between the two types of sound production, singing and speaking, is driven by the different muscular setups within the sound making mechanism: the larynx. You may have heard singers using the terms, head voice and chest voice. A lot of singers still use these two labels to describe the higher sounds of their voice and the lower sounds of their voice respectively.
